The Project "Roma Women Can Do It"
( June-September 2003, Chisinau, Republic of Moldova)
The project
"Women Can Do It" was launched by the Stability Pact for South
Eastern Europe Gender Task Force and financed by the Stability Pact. The NGO
"Women's Political Club-50/50" implemented the project in the Republic
of Moldova.
The implementation
period of the project was May-September 2003. During this period a National
Project Launch Conference was organized (including a press conference), 3 local
seminars and one evaluation seminar. The purpose of the project was the initiation
of roma women in the theory and practice of gender equality and to encourage
roma women to participate more actively in the public and political life and
also to create a network of socially active roma women or those women with potential
for public activity.
The implementation
of the project "Roma Women Can Do It!" started with the National Launching
Conference that was held on July 29th 2003 in the conference room of the Department
of interethnic Relations.

L. Burgula, MP, the Parliamentary Comission for Human Rights and National
Minorities;
D. Cujba, Secretary II, National Bourieu for the South Eastern Europe
Stability Pact;
L. Pogribnaia, President of the department for Equal Opportunities and
Family Politics, the Ministry of Social Protection;
N. Mlecico, General Director, the Department of Interethnic Relations;
L. Sorrentino, Member of the OSCE Mission in Moldova;
L. Gutan, representative of the Presidency;
Representatives of women's NGOs, representatives of national minorities;
The members of the Nation Board for implementing the projects initiated by the
SP GTF;
Representatives of roma women from local communities.
At the opening
of the National Conference the participants were welcomed by L. Burgula,
MP that saluted the launch of the project and mentioned that she highly appreciates
the purpose of the project.
The Project coordinator E. Mardarovici, made a vast presentation of the
project "Roma Women Can Do It!", referring to the low participation
of the roma women at the "Women Can Do It" seminars but that this
project is a chance for roma women to get involved and actively participate
at the movement of women for equal opportunities in the Republic of Moldova.
Mrs. E. Drosu, trainer, has made a presentation of the situation of roma
women, especially emphasizing the problem of educating roma children and the
state of health of roma women, the double discrimination of the roma women by
the roma men and on an ethnic criterion, she also described the organization
method and the methods of selecting the participants at the seminars;
Ms. M. Cibotari, trainer, presented the agenda of the seminars, and said
she would do anything possible for young girls to attend these seminars.
Ms. Liliana Sorrentino encouraged roma women to participate in the local
political life.
Daniele Cujba made a brief presentation of the National Board and saluted
the implementation of the project in Moldova.
Natalia Mlecico, believes that each woman should be more concerned by
social issues and that the implemented projects should only cover this area
of the issue, and that the participation in the public life cannot be the purpose
of a project. (The Participants at the Conference did not agree with this point
of view);
Lidia Pogribnaia welcomed the participants at the seminar and promised
her full support for successfully implementing the project; she made references
to roma social problems.
The representatives of women's NGOs (A. Mandacanu, V. Bodrug, M. Saharneanu,
N. Zghibarta) salu7ted the launch of the project and offered their support.
The local representatives of roma women said that they hope this project would
be special for roma women, although they have doubts concerning the interests
of roma women in the project's issues.
Each participant
at the Conference received a short description of the project (2 pages) in Romanian
and in Russian, according to preference.
The National Conference was held in a good atmosphere, many roma problems in
general were identified and especially problems of roma women.
The Conference ended with a concert presented by roma children that came from
Sangerei.
The launch of
the project "Roma Women Can Do It" during the press conference and
during the National Conference represented an event for the media: National
Radio Station, EURO-TV, "Flux" Agency, Basa-Press Agency, "Democratia"
and "Moldova Suverana" newspapers. We can conclude that the launch
of the project has had a wide coverage, especially in e-press.
